Readings For Course Teams

These readings may assist a course team in developing a shared understanding of elements of course team work.
Transformative Assessement (2008) by W. James Popham. Chapter 1 of this book does an excellent job of defining what formative assessment is (and isn't) and provides a basic overview of why formative assessment is so critical for teachers to utilize to increase student achievement.

Learning by Doing (2006) by DuFour, DuFour, Eaker & Many. Chapter 3 of this book focuses on the importance of clear targets and common formative assessments. A concise overview of the rationale behind a course team needing to ask questions of, "What do we want students to know & be able to do?" and, "How do we know if the students have learned it?"

Common Formative Assessments (2012) by Bailey & Jakicic. Chapters 2, 5, & 7 of this book explain the importance of course teams using common formative assessments to boost student achievement. Chapters 5 & 7 provide detailed instructions for how course teams can work collaboratively to conduct a high-quality formative assessment cycle.
